Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has hit out at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)for targeting governors.
In a video shared on Facebook, Saturday, Murkomen further claimed that devolution was under siege if governors will continue to be threatened by independent bodies.
He cited the absence of three governors in office, who are facing graft charges, as a clear indication that in the next couple of years, devolved units will be run at the EACC.
"Devolution is under threat, soon counties will be closed. Three governors have been cautioned not to go to the office. Let me tell you the truth, what is happening devolution will be run in the office of EACC and DCI. Currently, the governor's are trembling example one at Homa Bay," Murkomen said in part if the video.
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator further said that it is the task of Senators to protect the counties as outlined in the Constitution of Kenya.
This was in reference to a debate that was sparked after, he (Murkomen), together with Makueni's Mutula Kilonzo Junior appeared in court for Governor Mike Sonko in his graft case.
"You're speaking a lot of things saying that I represented Sonko in court. Let me tell you that the first responsibility of the Senate is not oversight. Go read article 96, the first responsibility is to protect counties and county assemblies," he said.
