Police in Nyanza region are holding five persons over claims of impersonated census enumerators.
Nyanza Police Commander Dr Vincent Makhoha who confirmed the incident said that the suspects will be probed and presented in court with immediate effect.
This is despite the government warning Kenyans against disrupting the exercise.
Two of the suspects were arrested in Homa Bay County, two in Kisumu County and one in Migori County. Makhoha also said that the security officers have been informed that some people are using the exercise to engage in crime.
“We realised that people wanted to take advantage of this exercise so we were very careful about it, we are still following up to see if there will be any masquerades and any other criminals who want to take advantage of this exercise,” said Dr Makhoha.
The officer also said that they are investigating an incident where a census official was attacked by a local after an altercation. The incident comes after Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna asked Kenyans to remain patient as the exercise enters its third day on Monday.
“Some Kenyans have already panicked because they did not see the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) officials on Saturday, but they will come, there is today, tomorrow until August 31 so let’s be patient,” Oguna said.
