A court in Eldoret on Friday released on bail two suspects accused of smuggling cigarettes from Uganda.
The two, Josephat Kamau and Moses Murithi who were arrested on Monday in Eldoret town were charged for being in possession of 390 cartons of supermatch contraband cigarettes with a street value of Sh27 million.
They allegedly failed to pay the government taxes estimated to be about Sh14.6 million.
Appearing before Eldoret Principal Magistrate Linus Hassan, the two denied the charges levelled against them.
They were released on an Sh2 million cash bail or a bond of Sh5 million.
The two suspects have been in police custody since they were arrested on Monday and it took the intervention of the court on Thursday for them to be arraigned in court.
Eldoret West OCS Solomon Wamae was detained for contempt of court after he defied the court order of producing the two suspects in court on Thursday.
The police had contravened the Constitution for failing to present the suspects in court within 24 hours.
The case will be heard on January 20, 2020.
