Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has won the general election amid a series of scandals that many political observers opined would bring his political career to a grinding halt.
In his speech, the 47-year-old expressed his gratitude to his supporters, casting his victory as a rejection of division and negativity.
"You did it, my friends. Congratulations," Trudeau told his supporters after it became clear that he would return as prime minister.
"From coast to coast to coast, tonight Canadians rejected division and negativity. They rejected cuts and austerity, and they voted in favour of a progressive agenda and strong action on climate change," he added.
Mr Trudeau will have to look for partners to form the next government as the governing Liberal Party failed to garner majority seats.
The Canadian opposition has been projected to win the popular vote but not majority seats.
It was not immediately clear after Trudeau's victory who the Liberals would join forces with to form the next government.
The Liberals are expected to enter negotiations with other parties as they scout for the best partners.
Controversy threatened to derail the prime minister's re-election bid after Time Magazine posted a photo of him with a black face at an evening gala years ago when he was a teacher.
