Renowned scholar Prof Makau Mutua has taken a jab at Deputy President William Ruto and his allies after they changed tune on the BBI report.
Ruto's camp has been maintaining it will only support the implementation of the report through Parliament, opposing calls for a referendum by the handshake team, which is allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
However, in a retreat in Naivasha on Friday, the allies of the DP said they will follow the route taken by Uhuru in implementing the report, whether through parliament or by a referendum.
In a tweet on Saturday, Mutua ridiculed the announcement and termed it as a tactical retreat.
The US-based law lecturer claimed the DP and his associates will never support the document which is a brainchild of Uhuru and Raila, and accused them of feigning support.
"Of course William Ruto and his Rift Valley brigands + his Mt Kenya quislings never have — and never will — support BBI. Their feigned “support” is hypocritical servile fearfulness and a tactical retreat ala Gen Sun Tzu," Mutua tweeted.
Speaking in Maragua, Murang'a County, during a women's empowerment drive, Ruto rubbished claims he had placed demands on the BBI report, saying he was fully behind it.
“If there is any problem, there is Parliament to pass laws, there are also commissions and if a referendum will be required, there are people,” the DP said on Friday.
