At least eight people were on early Sunday morning injured after criminal gangs indiscriminately descended on them in Nyali and Kisauni sub-counties.
The most affected areas are Kongowea, VOK and Leisure.
For years, criminal gangs in Mombasa County have been targeting residents in Kisauni and Likoni specifically in areas perceived to be congested with slum-like residential houses where the gangs easily hide after launching their attacks.
However, the Sunday attack happened at areas considered among many residents to be secure and safe.
The victims said the attackers were about 15 to 20 youths who were all in kanzus while police said they were only five attackers.
Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub described the Sunday morning attacks as “normal robbery and not as violent as the ones witnessed a month ago."
Victims said the gangs targeted early risers who were heading to Kongowea Market and town before they robbed, injured and beat them using crude weapons.
One victim at VOK was a tuk tuk operator only identified as Ali. He was attacked after he tried to rescue a woman who had been pinned down the gangs.
“As I was heading to the market, I suddenly realised we were surrounded by a gang of about 15 young men. Some of them grabbed a woman and pinned her down. When I tried to intervene, I was slashed on the head," said Ali.
Police said three suspects have already been arrested. One of them on the police's radar for a long time.
