In a tweet, the NARC Kenya party leader accused Safaricom for lack of confidence in their current top leaders who, she says, could have been appointed as interim CEO.

"Not good at all, this looks like a vote of no confidence on all the senior guys @SafaricomPLC and talks volumes of a deficit in succession planning!" Karua said in the tweet.

The appointment of Michael Joseph comes just a day after the death of Collymore who served as Safaricom CEO from 2010. He succumbed to cancer while at his home in Nairobi.

“Following the passing of the company’s CEO, at a Special Board meeting of the Directors, the board resolved to appoint Michael Joseph, a Board member of the Company as the interim CEO with immediate effect,” a statement issued by Kathryne Maundu, Safaricom’s Company Secretary said.

Joseph, who is the current Chairman of Kenya Airways, served as Safaricom CEO from July 2000 to November 2010.

Collymore had succeeded him.
