Kipkorir, however, says this will only happen if a report by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce will be implemented.

"Our Handshake will bear fruit after BBI Proposals are implemented .... Only then can we have hopes of Nobel Peace Prize," he said in a tweet.

The lawyer was responding to a tweet by colleague Ahmednasir Abdullahi who had asked him not to petition against Ethiopian Prime Minister's Nobel Peace Prize win

There are those who contended that the handshake made the head of state and the veteran opposition leader ideal candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize award given that they shelved their differences for the sake of national peace.

Uhuru and Raila, in a dramatic twist of events, shook hands after a protracted period of political tensions over a disputed repeat presidential poll that Raila asked his supporters to boycott.

The two leaders took to social media to congratulate the Ethiopian prime minister.

"As Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed has sought to promote reconciliation, solidarity and social justice. However, many challenges remain unresolved. Ethnic strife continues to escalate, and we have seen troubling examples of this in recent weeks and months," the Nobel Committee was quoted by CNN.
