Police officers in Kisii County have launched investigations following the death of a woman whose body was found in Gucha River on Tuesday.
Kisii Police Commander Martin Kibet said the body of Jackline Karani, who was a teacher at Kiong'anyi Primary School was found in the river near Kegati SDA church after she went missing on Monday evening.
"Ms Karani left her home on Monday evening and did not return. Members of the public recovered her body from River Gucha and alerted police. The cause of her death remains unknown," said Kibet.
Mr Kibet further noted that Karani's relatives informed the police that the deceased has been suffering from mental health problems. He, however, noted that the report does not mean a probe will not be carried out.
The police boss assured residents that detectives are on the ground to investigate the cause of the teacher's death.
"Members of the public should be patient and cooperate with police officers investigating the death. We must establish whether she was murdered before her body was dumped into the river or she jumped into the river by herself," noted Kibet.
The police commander further urged residents to exercise caution as the river has swollen due to heavy rain.
