Five General Service Unit (GSU) officers have been killed in Liboi in Garissa County after an explosive blew up.
They were blown up by the improvised device as they were travelling in a land cruiser government registered the vehicle in Dadaab.
Dadaab Deputy County Commissioner Harun Kamau who confirmed the incident said the officers who were in the vehicle survived but have critical injuries that may require specialized treatment.
"There was an attack this morning targeting officers on normal patrol," Kamau said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
"Unfortunately, we lost five officers while three others have been injured."
The explosion happened at about 9 am Wednesday at Hara in Liboi, an area that is prone to Al Shabaab attacks. Liboi is a few kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia border.
Kamau said the injured officers will be airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
He said authorities in the county have sent reinforcement officers to Liboi following the attack adding that security personnel will pursue suspected Al Shabaab militants who he said are behind the incident.
Garissa is among counties in Kenya which have for long suffered Al Shabaab militant attacks. The deadliest attack happened on April 2, 2015, when terrorists struck at the Garissa University College and killed 147 people.
