1. Performance deteriorating
The country finished 14th overall at the Gold Coast Games, which was not the best performance. In 2014 games in Scotland, team Kenya collected 9 gold medals, while in India in 2010, they managed 11 gold medals.
In Australia, the team bagged only 4!
2. Kenya needs to invest in other sports
Over the years, Kenya has overly depended on athletics as the main event for their athletes. It’s time to change and venture into other events where we can hunt medals. Other countries garner tens of medals from other indoor sports, exposing our weakness to a great deal.
3. Uganda emerging as Kenya’s biggest rival after Ethiopia
For long now Kenya’s main competitor in the middle and long distance races has been Ethiopia. However, over the past few events, that has changed with Uganda giving Kenya a run for its money, literally. With Ethiopia absent from the games, it was expected that Kenya would bag all the gold medals in both the men and women middle and long distance races, but that was never meant to be.
4. Kenya needs better preparations
Team Kenya’s preparations were marred with all manner of ups and downs, with athletes complaining over lack of training gear and unpaid allowances. This kills the team’s morale and generally affects their performance.
5. Kenya has lost the fighting passion
Gone are the days that Kenyans will not give up and would push their opponents to the line, especially in the middle and long distances. That was not the case in Gold Coast, as athletes easily surrendered to their opponents, giving them easy victories.
