Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been criticized for failing in his duty as the Nairobi governor since he was elected to office in August 2017.
Lately, Nairobians witnessed the disruption of a press conference that was meant to air out areas of the failures that the governor has incurred.
Here are a few pointers Nairobians refer to before blaming Sonko of failure:
1. Voluminous wastes
There are hills of waste in Nairobi and its environs that have been in place for years without collection. An example is the Dandora dump site which is a historic site, typically a physical feature that can be used to give directions because of its hilly appearance harbouring a good number of bird species. Nairobi generates tonnes of wastes a day beyond governor Sonko's efforts.
2. Floods and septic tank overflows
This is another thing the governor seemingly has no remedy for. Floods are all over Nairobi during rainy season rendering city roads impassable and lives are put to risk. This is a problem with the city's drainage where water has no way to the rivers in the outskirts. Septic overflows is another problem Sonko has not been able to rectify. Wastes are directed to rivers especially Nairobi river posing contamination to these water bodies.
3. Bad city roads
Some roads in the city have never been repaired since they were constructed and they are actually in bad state. Which city in the world would look good with pot holed roads everywhere? Tom Mboya street at the point to joining up with River Road and Thika road is in bad state with deep holes that carry water during rainy seasons and this is dangerous for motorists.
4. Traffic jam
This has been for a long time and it is Nairobi's nature. However, Sonko promised to put this to a stop and up to this moment the city residents witness crazy jams that consume a lot of time and fuel for motorists. Jogoo raod and Mombasa are the major roads with inevitable traffic jams and the governor had projected no remedy for this.
5. Hawkers in the city
Hawkers are not to be blamed but the city government is to be blamed. The hawkers are everywhere in the CBD even after Governor Sonko promised to find them a place to do their businesses. The city is crowded by hawkers especially at night in streets most so Tom Mboya selling cloths and fruits rendering the pedestrians ways impassable.
Governor Sonko should look into the above matters since these are the major parameters used to rank him and rate his job.
