Experts at SCORE http://www.score.org, a network of volunteer, expert business mentors, with more than 10,000 volunteers, explains out rules for avoiding conflicts of interest in a family business, these are:

1.Do not put family members on the payroll if they're not working for the business 

Make sure that everyone has a role and responsibilities that are spelled out and are very clear for them, this will compel each and every person to perform in the business, says Jane Hilburt-Davis, president of Cambridge-based Key Resources and co-author of Consulting to Family Businesses.http://familybusinessconsulting.com

2. Do not create two classes of employees; family vs. non-family

One should not show any any kind of special treatment to family members in a business, it will make them not to honor the business, and it also demotivates other employees who are not family members

3. Do not confuse family decisions and business decisions

Score experts say one should not allow family decision to affect the business, for instance allowing a family member to use a company vehicle for his or her personal affairs, using the company lawyer on family affairs among others. You have to professionalize the business, says Jane Hilburt-Davis

4. Establish healthy boundaries between family and business

Beside growing a business, it is also necessary to grow the family positively, "If you don't tend to the relationship outside of the business, you won't have a relationship," says Hilburt-Davis

5. Communicate honestly and openly with employees

The ability to have an effective communication with all members of the organization is critical, therefore it is necessary to inform the employees that amongst them is your family members.
