As the Members of the National Assembly reignites the Marriage Bill which allows men to marry more than one wife, here are some little facts you did not know about marriage as stated in The Marriage Act 2014 of the Kenyan constitution.
According to the Marriage act, a widow or a widower is allowed to decide whether to re-marry or stay single after the death of his or her spouse.
Another thing to note is that, as opposed to the religious believe where the woman is subjected to a man, the constitution states that all parties in a marriage have equal rights and obligations throughout the marriage.
For civil marriages, you are not allowed to dissolve the marriage or to separate if you have stayed for less than three years since the celebration of the marriage.
According to the act, you cannot be accused of cohabiting, living together in a long-term relationship that resembles a marriage. No proceedings may be brought to compel one spouse to cohabit with one another.
Lastly, marrying a person under the of 18 years commit an offence that can lead to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding one million shillings or to both.
