Transport in Nyamira town was paralysed for the better part of Tuesday morning after the traffic department cracked a whip on non-complying motorists on road usage.
The officers, who were accompanied by administration policemen, blocked the Nyamira-Nyabite road. Many vehicles were caught off-guard in the impromptu crackdown led by the Nyamira traffic base commander Maggi Munini.
The operation, according to the base commander, was aimed at bringing sanity in the roads and noted that the section of the road along the police line to the Nyamira hospital had been congested during the recent past due to the obstruction caused by motorists.
There was a rare spectacle after all possible escape routes were blocked and manned by police officers and the only option after being cornered led the motorists to the police station and this led to paralysing transport for some hours. Travellers were stranded as the motorists and the police engaged in running battles.
“The vehicles here cause unnecessary congestion even when there is no much vehicles, we are doing this until the motorists learn on how to observe traffic rules or face the full wrath of the law,” warned Mrs Munini.
She, however, encouraged the pedestrians and the motorists to make use of the parking space instead of causing jams on the road to avoid fatalities.
The motorists said that the parking cannot accommodate the increasing number of vehicles plying the Nyamira route.
The owners of at least 50 vehicles arrested will be arraigned in court.
