More than 500 litres of chang’aa were on Saturday netted at Kwa Murogi slums in an operation led by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria.

During the operation, local leaders asked the police and administrators to up their game.

Gikaria said those engaged in the sale of illicit brews have devised new ways of of conducting the business including carrying brews in thermos flasks while others bury kangara in cow sheds and pig sty.

“I am amused by children from this locality because they have approached us and directed us to the homes where the brews are made and sold. They pleaded with us to eradicate the brews because either father or mother has been affected,” he said.

He said he will approach the office of the State Counsel, Nakuru to ensure that second and third offenders in illicit brews are given a harsher punishment.

The operation was triggered by complaints from residents who have raised concern over the return of illicit brews in the area.

Most of the raided dens were found to be unhygienic with tattered clothes dipped inside the brewing bins and buckets.

Several packets of yeast were also netted in the operation. Gikaria said they will not relent in the fight against illicit brews and further urged the public to co-operate with them.

He said chiefs have to up their game because almost all of the raided houses were said to have been raided four days ago.

He called on the youth to take advantage of the many casual jobs in the area including those arising in construction firms instead of engaging in consumption of illicit brews.

Three people were arrested in the swoop and taken to Lanet AP camp awaiting prosecution on Monday.

All the apparatus used in making illicit brews were burnt after the operation.
