Twenty people from Eldoret town have been transferred to Nairobi for eye surgery.

The 20 were among hundreds of locals who turned up for a one-day free eye check-up and surgical eye clinic that was conducted at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Eldoret depot on Saturday.

Over 500 people were screened with several others provided with reading glasses and others given medicine.

"After the screening, we found out that 20 people needed surgery so we transferred them to Nairobi for that procedure. Others were given free glasses and drugs," said one of the health practitioners who was screening the locals.

The exercise was sponsored by the NCPB in conjunction with the Lions SightFirst Eye hospital.Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett graced the event.

"This is part of the Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) and we're giving back to the society," said NCPB Managing Director Newton Terer.
