President Uhuru Kenyatta has revealed the amount that the lowest paid seafarer will earn.

In his speech in the Port City of Mombasa as he flagged off 1.2 billion shillings worth of oil, the president revealed that the lowest paid seafarer would pocket 85,000 shillings per month.

"And remuneration for these seafarers is aligned to prevailing international salary scales which as you are aware are quite competitive. 

"I can happily disclose that the lowest salary of these seafarers will be a minimum of Kenya shillings of 85,000 per month," the president revealed.

The president also went on to reveal that the seafarers would be entitled to a return ticket for annual leave plus meals, accommodation, health insurance, and world class training to enable them to progress.

He requested the seafarers to make good use of the opportunities that had been given to them by taking good care of their families and to contribute to the growth of their communities and Kenya.

By working as seafarers, they were effectively Kenyan ambassadors and had a responsibility of ensuring that the reputation of the country was reinforced.

The Kenyan government entered into a partnership with the Mediterranean  Shipping Company.
