The owner of Precious Talents School Moses Wainaina was arrested on Thursday evening after public outcry following the death of eight students at the institution after a building collapsed.
The incident also left 64 other students injured. The man has since been taken to Kabete Police Station where he spent the night pending arraignment.
The government had earlier on ordered for the closure of the school. The school management also directed the parents to take their children to Riruta Satellite Primary School, Jamhuri Primary School and Ngong Forest Primary School after the arrest order.
Education CS Prof. George Magoha has pledged that the government is ready to provide the students with books and other forms of help when they transfer to the new schools.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Magoha said that the government will take stern action against the owners and the contractors who were tasked with the process of construction. He said that the building endangered the lives of the students, adding that the government will not take it easy anymore if that is what it takes to save the children from perishing.
“I have been to all the other classrooms and in my most humble opinion, they are stable. So if a spade must be called a spade ahead of the investigations, you notice that somebody went and build another storey on top of the temporary structure. If you go ahead and do so without anybody’s approval I think we should be fair to each other including being fair to the government,” said Magoha.
The government has also ordered for the inspection of all schools to ascertain whether they meet the standards. It emerged that most schools’ construction is below the required standards which put the lives of students at risk.
