Raila Odinga's comment in Elgeyo Marakwet early last week on politicians carrying money to churches in sacks appears not to have sat well with Deputy President Dr William Ruto.

Speaking in Migori on Saturday, the DP mounted a brutal rejoinder, accusing the ODM leader of taking his money to witch doctors.

"I heard them questioning why we are taking money to churches. Who asks them when they take their money to witch doctors? (Nilikuwa naskia wakisema ati oh hawa watu wanabeba oh sijui wanapeleka pesa kanisani, kwanza watueleze. Na hiyo yao wanapeleka kwa waganga nani anawauliza), " DP Ruto fired.

He went on to claim that Raila was suffering from the illusions of power that he had forgotten the importance of preparing for heaven.

The issue of politicians making contributions to churches has been subject to public debate, with the public opinion divided right in the middle.

Raila allies want politicians' contributions be regulated through legislation that will cap the contributions at 100,000 shillings.

On their part, Ruto and his allies have strongly rejected the suggestion that politicians should face limits on what they can contribute, saying that they have a duty to build churches.
