Police have arrested 10 people over their role in the exhumation of a body in Kakamega to retrieve county uniforms which the deceased had been buried in.
The officers are interrogating the suspects following the exhumation of the body of the late Martin Shikuku Alukoye, 31, who drowned in River Eburinde on August 7.
The deceased was laid to rest on Monday night after the elders from his clan conducted a series of rituals aimed at cleansing him. It, however, remains unclear why the kin decided to bury him in the county government uniform.
Residents in the area were left in shock after officers from the county government arrived at the home of the deceased to exhume his body in a bid to recover the uniform.
Police on Thursday summoned four family members of the deceased, area assistant chief and five officers from the county government over the matter.
Confirming the incident, Butere Deputy Sub-county Police Commander Julius Achuka said that the officers are probing the incident to establish whether the officers and family tampered with the body of the deceased.
"We are recording statements from 10 people in connection with exhuming a body without following the right procedures," Achuka told journalists at the Butere Police Station, as quoted by the Nation.
Butere Sub-county administrator Vitalis Masakhwe has, however, said that he is not aware of the incident as Kenyans continue to elicit mixed reactions over the issue.
