Addressing journalists in Machakos on Sunday, Mwangangi said that the disease has taken a toll on the country.

The former legislator said that the government ought to treat the ailment as a leading killer disease.

"I'm urging the government to declare cancer a national disaster, the monster has claimed so many lives and we can't just turn a blind eye to the issue," said Mwangangi.

He went ahead to recommend the formation of a body that will help in the fight against cancer.

"There is a body that helps in fighting HIV and AIDS called Aids control council of Kenya there's need for the formation of a similar body to teach people about the disease and how it can be fought, " he said.

Mwangangi urged county governments to equip hospitals in a bid to ensure there are cancer screening machines and available treatment.

He also urged residents to go for early cancer screening so that the disease can be treated if discovered.

"Even if you feel healthy, go for cancer screening because the disease is treatable in early stages, "he said.
