It is a new year, with the same William Ruto with same political ambitions. Perhaps, only his political strategy will change.
Welcome to 2020, another 365 days of political fireworks.
The Deputy President starts the new year fighting a fierce political battle within and outside his Jubilee Party.
For Jubilee's internal split, Dr Ruto has an opportunity to correct that "mess" when the party goes into an election to choose new leadership.
The current crop of leaders has been accused of being pro-President Uhuru Kenyatta and surprisingly, ODM leader Raila Odinga with an intention to dim the DP's statehouse bid come 2022.
With an election slated for early this year, Dr Ruto's future in Jubilee Party lies in his own hands. If he succeeds in mounting a complete take over of the party leadership from the current leaders, then he would have made a huge political statement to his rivals that he is simply a force that should never be ignored.
The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report politics will be another key political item that is expected to dominate 2020 politics.
In the past, his critics have accused him of being anti-BBI. But recently, the shrewd man from Sugoi seems to have changed his political tone on BBI. He has declared his "full support" for the document on condition that it will be people-centred.
The mode of implementing the report will, however, be the main bone of contention. The DP seems to be preferring the parliamentary system. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga seem to be rooting for a referendum.
Whether to support the referendum or not could be Dr Ruto's headache.
Going against President Kenyatta's wishes will no doubt leave the DP in an awkward political position. As such, the DP should be ready to compromise situations when necessary. If not, the "ogres" of Kenyan politics will consume him, never to recover again.
