Court on Wednesday summoned Mumias East MP Washiali over pupils swimming across a river to attend school.
The lawmaker was summoned alongside Member of the county assembly and county officers to explain why the pupils are forced to swim to across River Lusumu to get to Petros Primary School.
Before the heavy rains, the river had a wooden bridge but it was swept away during the December holidays leaving the students desperately searching for routes to school.
The students lamented that they are forced to strip naked before they can swim across the river to school during learning days. The mingling of the students while half naked has led to the rise in the affairs among them.
The parents have appealed county government and national government to intervene into the matter before it is too late.
When contacted over the matter, Washiali said that his critics wants to take advantage of the same to fight him. He noted that his rivals have decided to politicize the whole matter.
“As a parent, why do you allow your child to swim to school when there are other schools where they come from? Of what use will education be to your child when they die crossing the rivers?" Washiali asked.
The parents are now waiting for the national and county government to come to the rescue of the pupils.
