A 28-year-old man from Embali village, Emuhaya Sub-County in Vihiga was on Monday presented in court on allegations of raping and killing a 72-year-old granny.
Joseph Omwenga Asitiba is alleged to have killed Beatrice Osea on July 27 before dumping her body in a maize plantation.
According to a report by the Standard, the body of the victim was found with blood coming out of her private parts. It was also observed that the body had strangulation marks on the neck, an indication that she may have been strangled to death.
Corporal Pascaline Syombua pleaded with the court to allow them to detain the suspect for 14 more days to pave way for further investigations into the case, including conducting a mental check up on the suspect.
“The investigations are incomplete and we desperately need 14 days to conclude the probe. The suspect is yet to undergo a mandatory psychiatric test and the body of the deceased is set to be subjected to post mortem to establish the actual cause of death,” said Syombua.
Kakamega Senior Principal Magistrate Hazel Wandere allowed for the suspect to be held at Luanda Police Station as further investigations are conducted.
“Due to the serious nature of the offence, I allow the application for detention. I direct that he be presented before a psychiatric to ascertain if he is fit to stand trial,” said the magistrate.
Blood samples of the suspect were also taken for DNA analysis.
The case will be mentioned on August 13, 2019.
