National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has weighed in on the calls for a referendum before 2022
Speaking on Friday to Editors Guild and the Media Council in Kisumu, Duale said that there are several law gaps that should be filled before anyone can root for a change in the law.
He noted that Parliament is right to push for a change in the constitution but there is time for everything.
He also said that President Uhuru Kenyatta is likely to block the process if he notices it interferes with his delivery of duties.
Duale also said that the President needs a peace of mind to initiate the projects he promised Kenyans before he completes his second and final term in power.
He also said that he is fully behind the Members of Parliament electing the President.
"Whereas the Parliament has the way to amend the Constitution, there is no timeline. The president can even decide to keep the Bill even for two years. The president can decide to sabotage it because there is no timeline on when he should sign the document,” Duale said, as quoted by The Star.
"Time is ripe for review of the Constitution. There is however need to develop a law on referendum in light of the gaps that exist in Articles 256 and 257 of the Constitution," he added.
He also said that the law has no place for the conducting of a referendum.
He said that there are different projects that are yet to be established by the government, adding that Uhuru should be backed in the war against graft and achievement of the Big Four Agenda rather than fighting him.
