Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been summoned to appear before a Voi court on December 18, failure to which he will be arrested.
Confirming the decision, police spokesman Charles Owino has said that the governor is to reappear in person before a Voi Magistrate court on Wednesday next week to answer to assault charges.
These developments stem from a recommendation by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution to have the governor charged after receiving files from police in Taita Taveta county.
Governor Sonko is alleged to have resisted arrest and in the process assaulting Coast Regional Police Commander at the Voi airstrip during his arrest that was full of drama a week ago.
Reports indicate that a total of four witnesses among them has been lined up to testify against Governor Sonko in the new charges.
On November 7, just a day after Sonko was arrested on allegations of graft, the Office of the Inspector General labelled additional charges.
“During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist arrest hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In the process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment,” police spokesperson Charles Owino stated.
Governor Sonko was on November 11 released on Sh15 million cash bail after he spent 5 days in police custody. As one of the conditions of being released on bail, Sonko was barred from accessing his office at City Hall.
