As 2022 politics gains momentum, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruyoit has come out to assure Rift Valley residents that Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid is well on course, and gaining momentum.
This is amidst reports that the DP has fallen out with his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta, and that the deep state was plotting to block him from becoming Kenya's 5th Head of State.
In an interview with a Kalenjin vernacular radio station on Wednesday, Cheruiyot said Ruto has not tensed because of the current political turbulence, adding that he was firm in his ambition to take over power in the next polls.
“He is as strong as ever. In fact, he told us that he has fought bigger battles in his political life including when he was fixed at the ICC (International Criminal Court) by his opponents…”
“He told us, hey, don’t let these things worry you because they are normal and expected… We need to stay on course because 2022 is still far," the Senator said as quoted by People Daily.
Cheruiyot said the DP has made inroads and become popular in areas that voted for opposition in the last elections, adding that by 2022, his support base will be strong and large.
He cited Western Kenya, which is the backyard of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and Ford-Kenya's Moses Wetang'ula, as one of the areas Ruto has 'conquered'.
“We have made inroads in Western and I wish they allowed the Mumias meeting to proceed, you would have seen for yourselves,” Cheruiyot said in reference to the rally organised by Ruto's allies that was outlawed by the government.
