Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has given a stern warning to businessmen still selling potatoes in sacks of more than 50kgs.
Mbugua said that those who will be caught going against the 'Potato law' which was passed in June this year risk heavy fines or long jail terms.
"We do not want anybody to exploit our farmers. All potato traders must follow the 50kg-rule to be on the safe side of the law," said Mbugua.
The governor said that they are also working with other potato growing counties to ensure that the same is followed.
"We have talked to our neighbours here, Nyandarua County to ensure that we are applying the law uniformly," he said.
He added, "We have also talked to governors where we have major potato markets like Nairobi and Mombasa to ensure it is only 50kg bags being allowed into the market."
He said they will use roadblocks to nab those transporting potatoes in more than 50kg bags.
Mbugua was speaking in Kuresoi where he opened a maternity ward.
