Nakuru County has recorded 51 deaths resulting from road accidents in January 2015, traffic commandant Mary Omari has said.
Addressing a press briefing on Monday, Omari said majority of the deaths recorded occurred along the main highways of Nairobi-Nakuru, Nakuru-Eldoret, Nakuru-Kericho and Maimahiu-Narok most of which could have been avoided.
“So far since the year begun we have lost 51 people on our roads with over 100 people being left with injuries. Most of the accidents were caused by over speeding motorists, overtaking carelessly and pedestrians’ refusal to use pathways and flyovers,” said Omari.
She noted that Nakuru County has recorded the largest number of accidents in the country in the first month of 2015 after Nairobi.
“The number of accidents on our roads has risen this first month and if we compare it with last year’s statistics you will find that a time like this in 2014 we had recorded very few accidents,” she said.
She blamed carelessness among all road users including those walking on foot as the major cause of the many accidents on county roads and called on road users to strictly take road safety as a personal responsibility.
