A family in Kimilili Town is seeking a court order to exhume a body of its relative who was mistakenly picked by the wrong family after confusion at the morgue.
The family of Mary Nasimiyu wants the court to allow them exhume the body which was picked by the family of Grace Nakhumicha Wekesa at the Dreamland Hospital Mortuary.
The family says that after the confusion, the other family proceeded to bury Nasimiyu in Bungoma West, after mistakenly transferring her body to Lugulu Hospital Morgue.
According to Longinus Wekesa, uncle to the departed, the two bodies were initially being preserved at the Dreamland Morgue and they now want to lay the body of Grace to rest at her matrimonial home.
“We did thorough investigations and found that the body of my niece had been picked and taken to Lugulu Hospital Mortuary by another family and then to Ndakaru in Bungoma West for burial,” Wekesa said on Thursday as quoted by the Standard.
He said that the other family has equally been shocked, especially after spending Sh2 million in the burial ceremony that was even attended by Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka last Friday.
“They were very shocked to realise that they had buried a different person after spending more than Sh2 million to carter for the funeral expenses,” said Mr Wekesa.
Bungoma West Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Kirui said that his officers are ready to exhume the body after the Dreamland Hospital administration said that Nakhumicha's son picked the wrong body as he was in a hurry.
“It is unfortunate that the son took the wrong body... the two women look almost identical. We are going to exhume the body once the two families obtain court orders,” said the police boss.
The body of Nakhumicha is still lying st the morgue.
