Interior and coordination of national government cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i and devolution and the ASALs cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa have gone to Makueni to console with families affected by floods.

The two did not come empty-handed as they brought with them relief supplies according to a tweet by Dr Matiang'i. They also offered a message of encouragement to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the floods and landslides.

"My colleague @EugeneLWamalwa, @governorkibwana and I took the government's humanitarian relief materials and our messages of encouragement to the families who lost their loved ones and all those affected by floods & landslides in Kilungu and neighbouring areas in Makueni County, "read a tweet by Interior CS Interior CS's Fred Matiang'i.

The humanitarian visit by the two cabinet secretaries came as torrential rains continue to pound various parts of the country. Destruction of livelihoods and properties, displacements and loss of lives have been reported.

The government in collaboration with counties and the humanitarian organisation has been working to ensure that affected communities are accorded the necessary support.

The government spokesperson painted this week a grim picture of the situation, saying that about 17,000 people have been displaced by torrential rains.

"Humanitarian situation: Approx 330 people adversely affected, 17,000 displaced,132 lost their lives, an undetermined number marooned/cut off. Over 11,000 livestock swept away. Undetermined acreage of farmlands submerged. Crops of unknown value damaged/destroyed, " the government spokesperson tweeted on Tuesday.
