Kenya Government spokesman Retired Colonel Cyrus Oguna has given an update on the locusts invasion ravaging parts of the Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa counties.
Writing on his official Twitter handle, the government spokesman said that the state was keenly monitoring the situation.
He said that the locusts are desert locusts and had been established to have come from parts of the Horn of Africa.
"The Govt has keenly been monitoring a possible invasion of desert locusts into the country thus posing threat to food security. The threat emanated from desert locust that had been observed in parts of the Horn of Africa in November 2019, " the tweet read.
He said that President Uhuru had been briefed about the situation.
"The president fully briefed of this situation directed that urgent measures be undertaken to deal with the situation as quickly as possible," the spokesman added.
Residents living in affected areas have appealed to the government to intervene to save them from the prospect of famine.
Leaders from northeastern Kenya have blamed the relevant ministries for not doing enough to protect them.
Garissa Township Member of parliament Aden Duale blamed Agriculture Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri for the invasion.
“This is a serious crisis that must be addressed urgently. Mr Kiunjuri and his principal secretary should not continue to be on holiday as the people in North Eastern suffer. So far the two have not spoken, they have not done anything to write home about,” Mr Duale said.
