Garissa Township Member of Parliament, who also doubles up as the leader of the majority in the National Assembly, Aden Duale has thrown his weight behind a parliamentary system.
Speaking on Saturday in Garissa, the outspoken legislator said that the pastoral communities would rally behind the creation of the position of a Prime Minister.
"Sasa sisi tunataka kama wafugaji tuambie ndugu zetu Wakenya wacha tuende parliamentary system Kenya iongozwe na prime minister, (We as members of the pastoral community want to tell our Kenyan brothers to let's embrace a parliamentary system for Kenya to be led by a Prime Minister)" the National Assembly majority leader said. Duale called for a system where the party with the majority of Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to elect a Prime Minister and form the government.
His proposition would be a departure from the current presidential system where the people of Kenya directly elect the person that they want to lead the government.
Should the proposition be adopted in a referendum, then it would fundamentally alter the country's governance system as Kenyans know it.
One of the countries that have a parliamentary system is the United Kingdom where members of the majority party determine who will lead the government.
Kenyans will have the opportunity to weigh in on changes in the country's governance structure in a possible referendum as part of recommendations by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
