Doctors in Nairobi Hospital have placed former President Daniel Moi on life support at the facility due to breathing difficulties, it has emerged.
Contrary to news that the nonagenarian was rushed to the hospital on Monday, a top KANU youth official says the elderly statesman was taken to the hospital on Thursday.
Almost a fortnight ago, Moi was taken to the same facility for a 'check up'. It's now however clear when he was discharged from the hospital.
His long-serving Press Secretary, Lee Njiru, allayed fears saying, "It is true Mzee Moi went to Nairobi Hospital today (Monday) but it [was] a routine medical check-up.”
He added: “It is prudent and advisable that everybody should go for medical check-up, so Mzee Moi went for a medical check up.”
But according to the official, who is not allowed to speak for the family, Moi is under Intensive Care Unit in the restricted private wing at the hospital.
Only few politicians and family members are allowed to access him. His physician Dr David Silverstein is leading the team of doctors monitoring him.
"Mzee developed breathing difficulties and was rushed to the hospital on Thursday. He has been in ICU and doctors are fighting to save him," said the official in confidence.
Moi's health has been undee surveillance by doctors and family members. It's only few members of the public who are allowed to visit him.
For weeks now, the official added, Moi has been operating from his Kabarnet Gardens in Nairobi due to 'accessibility' to the hospital. He prefers his Kabarak home.
The former President was first admitted in Israel last year. Since then, he has been receiving guests at his Kabarak home. President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga are among those who have visited.
In May this year, Moi could barely make it to the funeral of his eldest son Jonathan Moi at Eldama Ravine. He stayed in his car during burial.
