Citizen TV Swahili news presenter Mwanahamisi Hamadi has revealed that she was among the passengers who were onboard MV Harambee when a car slid off its ramp and plunged into the sea.
Speaking on Monday, Hamadi said that there was nothing that they could do and had to watch as the ill-fated car and its occupants gradually sank into the Indian Ocean.
"As I told you yesterday, I was on board that ferry when the tragedy occurred but there was nothing we could do because we learnt about it after the car had already sank. (Kama nilivyokueleza hapo jana, nilikuwa ndani ya ferry hiyo ajali hiyo ikitokea lakini hatukuweza kufanya lolote manake tulikuja kuishtukizia tu tunaambia tayari gari limetumbukia)," she said in a video shared on YouTube. The tragic incident has brought scrutiny to the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) with a section of Kenyans calling for the authority to be disbanded and its management held to account for negligence.
In a statement on Sunday after the incident, KFS said that an investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances of the tragedy.
Family members who spoke to the press expressed their disappointment in how efforts to recover the bodies of the occupants of the vehicle was going.
