Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) management are expected to be questioned by Members of Parliament over the outgoing Auditor General Edward Ouko's report.
The National Assembly Public Investment Committee (PIC) chaired by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir is expected on Tuesday to probe KFS management.
“The whole of this week, we have a meeting with KFS, KMA and the CS,” Mr Nassir said as quoted by Nation.
Mr Nassir revealed that lawmakers will be interested in knowing what made KFS to ignore safety concerns that had been raised a year back.
“There are some repairs and servicing of the ferry that had been flagged by the auditor general and no action was taken. These are some of the issues the committee wants KFS to answer,” Mr Nassir said.
In a report dated back in July 6th 2018, former Auditor General Edward Ouko sounded a warning to KFS over their vessels' pulleys.
“It was observed that most of the pulleys on most ferries are defective thus causing the plows to be submerged in water when the ferries are moving. This endangers both pedestrians and motorists.” read section of the report.
Ouko's warning to KFS came to pass on September 28 after a car slid from the vessel and plunged into the Indian Ocean killing Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda.
Sunday Nation also reported that all ferries were to be installed with new engines after a budget was allocated for the same. Unfortunately, new engines were not installed at all.
While the two were recently laid to rest in Makueni County, the MPs are concerned about the safety at KFS.
