Medics indicated that Makau was suffering from diabetes and her blood sugar hiked causing her blood pressure to drop.

She was in the company of her sister, Damaris Makau, who said that all was well when they commenced the journey, but along the way, her sister complained of dizziness.

"She complained of dizziness, at one point she said she was going to faint," said Damaris.

Her condition worsened before reaching the Kibwezi Station, forcing the crew to make a sudden stop to attend to her.

Efforts to resuscitate her were fruitless as her condition became worse.

She was rushed to Kibwezi sub-county hospital where he was admitted, but died an hour later after her admission to the facility.

“Medics who were travelling with the patient on the train raised the alarm after she fell ill before the train stopped in Kibwezi,” said Grace Muendo; the nurse in charge of the hospital as quoted by Daily Nation
