The county government of Nyeri has issued a cholera alert, only days after a similar alert was issued in the neighbouring Kirinyaga county.
The county government, through its health department, says that the county could be the next to be hit, especially after three cases of the disease were reported in Kirinyaga.
County Director of Health Services Dr Nelson Muiru has since given a raft of measures to keep residents safe, including a ban on food hawking.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, he said that the county will also be re-inspecting all food outlets, adding that any cases of the disease should be reported.
“Any suspected cholera case must be reported to the office of the County Director of Health Services for further investigations and immediate response,” he said.
The county also wants residents to observe hygiene while handling food and keep the environment clean to avoid an outbreak of the deadly disease.
Health officials in all the county's health facilities have also been directed to quickly act on suspected cases of cholera infections.
He said that as a result of the proximity of Nyeri to Kirinyaga and the frequent interaction between locals, Nyeri finds herself in a position where she has to be very careful.
