52-year-old Petronila Munyasa claims to have been in a romantic relationship with Shinali before the 35-year-old son was born.

She, however, noted that the MP has not told him about the death of her son, and would only hear about it through relatives on Saturday, days after Atema's death.

“I sent him (Shinali) a text message and told him to give me information regarding this issue because I am his mother, but since then he has not responded. I am in the dark and unaware of any arrangements,” she told the Standard.

The woman who claims to have been close with the son, and even met him before he left for the US in January, says the MP took Chris since she could not afford his education.

"...he went to live with his father who took care of his education to university level,” she added on Monday, and now wants to be included in the burial arrangements.

The woman who lives in Kangemi Dam in Nairobi claims that they met with the MP in 1981 and became friends but separated after she became pregnant.

Atema drowned in a swimming pool in Arizona, while trying to save a young woman some two weeks ago.

The marine officer who has been posted in Iowa was on holiday in Arizona.
