Deputy President Dr William Ruto has mourned the deaths of at least 24 people in West Pokot caused by a landslide.
DP Ruto on Saturday sent a condolence message to the families of the victims.
He also appealed to those living in areas that are at a high risk of a landslide to be on high alert.
"Sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the West Pokot landslide. May God give you peace and comfort, and may our prayers ease the pain of this great loss. We urge those in vulnerable areas to be on alert during this period of the short rains," he wrote.
Media reports indicate that about 24 people have lost their lives as a result of the landslide.
Torrential rains have been pounding West Pokot county.
County commissioner Apollo Okello said that the recovery efforts have been significantly hampered by the heavy rains.
He stated that seven people belonging to the same family perished.
“Seven people of the same family were buried alive in Nyarkulian area, Pokot South and 24 were buried alive in Muino area, Pokot Central Sub-County, " the County Commissioner said.
Animals and people are feared to have been buried in the landslide.
