Leaders behind the botched Mumias rally that was to be held in Nabongo Grounds on Saturday have been faulted for misleading Kenyans.
Led by former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, the group claimed that the meeting was aimed at addressing the plight of cane farmers and the dying sugar sector in the region.
However, the remarks have been questioned by political analyst Martin Andati, who says that they are untruthful, as the factories, including the Mumias Sugar, cannot be revived through rallies.
Speaking on Monday, Andati said that the leaders know the procedure they need to follow to help with the revival, and were only hiding behind the sugar issue to engage in politics.
"You cannot revive Mumias through rallies, we know that the factory and the others were felled by corruption and there are ways to revive them (Hauwezi fufua Mumias kupitia rally, tunajua Mumias na zile zingine ziliangushwa na ufisadi na kuna njia za kuzifufua)," he said on Radio Maisha.
However, he faulted the government, through the police, for blocking the function, remarking that those behind it should have been allowed to proceed with their plans.
He pointed out that since it was to be held over 30 kilometres from the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) forum in Bukhungu Stadium, there was no risk of breach of peace.
"The rallies were 30 kilometres apart, there was no danger at all (Hizi rally zilikiwa over 30 kilometers apart, hapakuwa na hatari yoyote )," he added.
However, it ended with teargas being lobbed at the leaders who were to address the rally, who attempted to proceed with their plans despite earlier warnings by the police.
