Attention has turned to Kisumu's Dunga Beach as the new centre of trade in Kisumu City, following the fall of the popular Lwang'ni Beach within the same city.

Stalls at Lwang'ni were demolished last month to pave way for the expansion of the Kisumu Port, having been standing on a piece of land owned by the Kenya Railways Corporation.

Consequently, all attention has now shifted to Dunga, with some of the traders who were selling their goods in the demolished market acquiring spaces in Dunga.

Dunga Beach Management Vice-Chairperson Maurice Misori says that about 90 per cent of Lwang'ni traders have been accommodated in the destination, bringing in more clients.

“Almost 90 per cent of the people who left Lwang’ni have come here looking for spaces to set up businesses,” Misori maintained.

Misori says that as much as the market cannot accommodate all the evictees, they are trying as hard as they can to accommodate as many as possible.

“We may not accommodate everyone who is looking for spaces here, but since this is community land, we just want to find a way of ensuring that people get somewhere to earn a living,” he added.

However, some traders who have been at Dunga are of the opinion that there is need for the new entrants to adopt some new behaviours, like sitting calmly and waiting for customers.

This was not the case in Lwang'ni where people shouted to attract customers.
