Renowned criminal lawyer Cliff Ombeta has explained the significance of a postmortem.
Speaking on Tuesday in an exclusive interview with Royal Media Services-owned Citizen Television, Ombeta explained that a postmortem is important as it helps in providing answers to fundamental questions.
He noted that it helps in knowing how a dead person met his death and the period which they have been dead.
Mr Ombeta, who is acting for the family of late business tycoon Tob Cohen, contended that information gathered in a postmortem is used in a court of law because of its scientific nature.
"A postmortem can reveal how a dead person died and what caused his or her death... It can also show the period that the deceased has been dead (Upasuaji unaeza kuonyesha kuwa mtu ambaye aliyekufa alikufa kivipi. Ni nini kilisababisha kifi chake... Pia inaonyesha period ama tuseme muda ambao mtu alikuwa ashakufa)," the lawyer said.
Cliff Ombeta spoke at the Chiromo Mortuary where a postmortem on the body of Tob Cohen is expected to be carried out today, Tuesday, by government pathologist Johansen Oduor.
The Dutchman's body was found dumped in an underground storage tank after missing for about 40 days.
In an order on Monday, presiding Judge Jessie Lesiit barred the media from publishing details of the investigations and also barred the prosecution from prosecuting the case in the media.
