Police in Kericho county are holding a woman accused of stabbing her daughter to death.
The 30-year-old suspect reportedly killed the girl on Wednesday morning, as she was preparing to report back to school for the third term.
The incident happened in Belgut sub county, where the police say she used a kitchen knife to assault the 10-year-old who is a class four pupil at Arise And Shine Academy.
Confirming the incident which happened at Kiptaldal village in Waldai Ward, Belgut OCPD Philip Okello said that the woman has since gone mute, refusing to speak to the police.
He said that after her arrest by neighbours and handover to the police, the suspect has also refused to speak to her relatives.
"The suspect has taken a vow of silence and has refused to talk to us (police) or to any of her relatives. We have recovered a blood-stained kitchen knife and kept it as an exhibit," he said.
He said that the girl succumbed at the Kericho District Hospital and her body transfered to the Kericho County Hospital Mortuary.
"The young victim was rushed to Kericho District Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries," he said, adding that the police are now probing the possible reason behind the murder.
