President Uhuru Kenyatta has halted the new National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) regulations after public uproar.
In his State of the Nation address from Mombasa on Tuesday, Uhuru said that the proposed changes will not be implemented until further notice.
He said that the move has been reached to pave way for the debate on the same.
He made it clear that it is evident that there is need to consult over the same before the new rules can be adopted.
The NHIF team had advocated that all married individuals would be allowed to enlist only one of their spouses as beneficiaries from the scheme.
The new rules also stated that one can only benefit from the scheme after 90 days Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, Murang’a Woman Rep Sabina Chege, Kiambu MP Jude Njomo are among those who have opposed the new rules.
Wetangula wanted the NHIF team shown the door.
"The president must overhaul the NHIF management team and give other qualified Kenyans an opportunity to serve in such positions,” he appealed.
