Richard Koome, 27 years old from Meru County got arrested while trying to smuggle miraa in India last year, according to his story covered by Daily Nation on Saturday.
What was supposed to be a life changing business trip turned out to be a Miraa smuggling trip that landed him in trouble. Koome got arrested with 66 kilos of miraa at Mumbai Airport.
Koome got lured into this idea by a man only identified as Yusuf. However, Yufus vanished when he got arrested.
His mother, Zipporah Nkatha, has been trying all ways out to secure his release in vain.
Since she is only a single mother and a casual laborer, Nkatha couldn't raise the Sh1 million asked as bond to secure Koome's release from Taloja Central Prison, where he is being held.
She tried reaching out to friends through fundraiser but some friends who had promised to help never shows up.
She also tried reaching out to area Member of Parliament. Fortunately, the issues was raised in Parliament and the government promised to help bring back Koome.
“I approached various MPs who promised to act until Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi got wind of the issue and raised the matter in Parliament. He has also promised to help bring him back,” she said as quoted by Daily Nation.
This comes after she had been conned by various people who pretended to help. One of them being Yusuf, who lured Koome to India.
“I sent Yusuf Sh5,000 but he blocked my calls thereafter. At one time he said he had travelled to Tanzania. That is the last I heard from him. I cannot concentrate on any work because I fear for my son's life in a foreign country,” she said as quoted by Daily Nation.
