Political strategist and analyst Kipchumba Karori now says that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga is slowly transforming into an establishment candidate.
This comes at time when Odinga has been closely working with President Uhuru Kenyatta, with some of Odinga's allies openly asking Uhuru to endorse the former Prime Minister as his successor.
However, Karori has cautioned the leader against appearing dependent on the state, warning that it might render his efforts, including his successful marketing, useless.
Speaking on Sunday, he opined that though Raila has managed to use the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to regain popularity, depending on endorsements might cost him in the elections.
This he also based on Raila's meetings with members of the Moi and Kenyatta families lately.
"Whereas Raila Odinga has used BBI very well to market himself, he needs to make sure that he doesn't package himself as an establishment candidate. We have seen what has happened to Hillary Clinton," he said on KTN's Inside Politics.
He said Kenyan politics is slowly changing into a populist arena, where people are elected based on their popularity among the people and not endorsements from political bigwigs.
He opined that should he continue with his operations as he is doing them now, Raila might lose to another candidate who lacks the state support but has the backing of the masses.
"Our politics is becoming populist with time, status quo against establishment agents or what we call dynasties locally are people when you are a populist you will always be going against the status quo," he added.
