A few weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed that Kenya has joined the list of commercial oil exporters, details have emerged about the buyer of the first 200,000 barels.
Its worth noting that the government had remained silent about the buyer initially, but it has now emerged that Chinese ChemChina UK Limited is the buyer of the first ever export.
In a statement, the government on Thursday said the deal was sealed after the company beat all other bidders who were eyeing the crude oil which was sold at Sh1.2 billion.
"ChemChina UK LTD was selected following a competitive tender process… an invitation to bid was issued to prospective buyers on 26th July 2019," reads the statement as quoted by Citizen Digital.
Speaking two weeks ago, Uhuru expressed confidence that the money and that set to follow will help in further bettering the lives of Kenyans.
"I think we have started the journey and it is up to us to ensure that those resources are put to the best use to make our country both prosperous and to ensure we eliminate poverty," said the Head of State.
Chemchina will begin shipping the pit out of the country through the Port of Mombasa next week.
