An Indian rape victim who was set on fire has succumbed to her injuries, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported.
The 23-year-old woman died after suffering a cardiac arrest at a Delhi hospital where she was undergoing medical treatment.
She came under attack on Thursday as she was on her way to a court to testify against two suspects accused of raping her.
The incident occurred in Unnao district of northern Uttar Pradesh state.
The Indian law enforcement authorities said that the suspects in her murder are behind bars awaiting trial.
Doctors who attended to the woman say that she suffered 95 per cent burns.
“She was having 95 per cent burns,” Dr Shalabh Kuma who attended to her said according to The Guardian newspaper.
"Toxic and hot fumes had filled her lungs," the doctor added.
There was public outrage over the incident with protesters calling for the death penalty to be imposed on the suspects upon conviction.
According to police documents, the rape victim alleged that she had been raped at gunpoint on December 28, 2018.
The news of her death come in the wake of reports that police in Indian on Friday shot dead four rape suspects who had raped another woman in Hyderabad.
